Giant Hole Under House
A bedroom had been added onto a 55-year old Santa Cruz house. As The House Whisperer inspector walked across that bedroom floor… there was a discernible
sag in the middle of the floor.
A large steel ball bearing was placed at the baseboard and it rolled slowly towards the center of the bedroom in a spiral pattern… very odd.
When a home inspector first enters a crawlspace, they turn on a flashlight to see if there're any shining eyes looking at them.
What greeted the inspector’s eyes this time… was a support post, a concrete pier and a concrete footing 'floating' above a large hole under the
center of the bedroom.
Before Sears and Montgomery Ward started selling round metal septic tanks… the early Santa Cruz area had septic tanks handmade from Redwood boards.
It turns out the bedroom had unknowingly been built over an abandoned Redwood septic tank where the lid had collapsed.
And now you know why the ball bearing spiraled in the center of the floor due to the hanging weight of the concrete.
